Fassbinder's World on a Wire - Looking Ahead to Today

*World on a Wire* (1973), directed by Rainer Werner Fassbinder, was conceived as a science fiction television miniseries during a time when the genre was not widely embraced in West German cinema. Fassbinder, known for his work in the New German Cinema movement, was given a rare opportunity to explore speculative themes, thanks to the support of producer Alfred Biolek and the German television network ARD. The project was developed in parallel with Fassbinder's feature film *The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant*, and filming took place in a compressed schedule that reflected the director's intense work ethic and prolific output during the period. The story, adapted from Daniel F. Galouye's 1968 novel *Simulacron-3*, follows a scientist who discovers that reality itself may be a simulation, a concept that resonated with the existential and philosophical concerns prevalent in Fassbinder's work. Despite its ambitious premise and innovative visual style, *World on a Wire* was not completed in its original form, with only two of the planned four episodes being produced and broadcast. The surviving material has since been reassembled and released in various formats, allowing audiences to appreciate the film's prescient themes and Fassbinder's unique approach to speculative storytelling.
