Fill the Void

Shira, eighteen, is the youngest daughter of the Mendelman family and is about to be married to a promising young man of the same age and background, a prospect she finds both prepared for and exciting. On Purim, her twenty‑eight‑year‑old sister Esther dies while giving birth to her first child, Mordechay, and the resulting grief delays Shira’s intended marriage. The situation shifts when Yochay—Esther’s late husband—is proposed as a match to a widow from Belgium; although he feels it is premature, he acknowledges that he will eventually need to consider remarriage. When the girls’ mother learns that Yochay might marry the Belgian widow and relocate with her only grandchild, she suggests a match between Shira and the widower. Consequently, Shira must choose between her personal desire and familial duty, discovering that the conflict resides solely within her own heart.
