Finding Vivian Maier
A determined archivist races to uncover and legitimize a reclusive nanny’s hidden treasure trove of street photographs before the world forgets them forever.
Synopsis
Vivian Maier's photographs were seemingly destined for obscurity, buried among the many objects she collected over her lifetime. Instead, these images have had a significant impact on the world of street photography and profoundly affected the life of the man who introduced them to the public. This film explores the unexpected journey of John Maloof's discovery of Vivian Maier, unfolding the enigmatic story through her documentary films, photographs, unusual collections, and personal recollections from those who knew her. What began as a blog to showcase her work soon became a viral sensation within the photography community. Photos that were once headed for the trash now appear in gallery exhibitions, a forthcoming book, and this documentary film.

How many hands made this film
The scale of the collaboration
Principal cast & crew: 13
These are the principals we have on file — the full crew ran to the hundreds. Every film this size was made by far more hands than any credits list ever names.
Why a floor?
This is a minimum, not a total. We only count the credits we’ve captured so far, and coverage is uneven — a blockbuster might show a few hundred names while another of the same size shows a couple dozen. The real crews all ran into the thousands. The number here only grows as full credits are enriched — so we frame it as a floor, never a headcount.
