Synopsis
Stanley Kubrick’s short documentary focuses on Father Fred Stadtmueller, a Catholic priest who serves a large 4,000-square-mile parish in rural New Mexico. To reach his widely dispersed congregation, Stadtmueller pilots his own Piper Cub aircraft, the Spirit of St. Joseph. Over the course of two days, Kubrick documents the priest’s activities as he celebrates Mass, resolves a dispute between quarreling children, participates in a funeral, and transports a sick child to receive medical care, offering a glimpse into the difficulties and quiet dedication of his daily work.
