Synopsis

Serge Gainsbourg died on March 2, 1991, at the age of 62. While the general public may have come to know him primarily through his television appearances in the 1980s, Gainsbourg had pursued multiple careers prior to those years. This self-portrait documentary, which strips away his many masks, explores the theme he expressed: "In the end, I was left with the watermark of this shy and secretive child who implies candor, innocence, insubordination and savagery." Each sequence of this modest and passionate portrait reveals a Gainsbourg who is secret, intimate, funny, and touching, far removed from Gainsbarre, the public persona he adopted in his final years.

How many hands made this film

The scale of the collaboration

Principal cast & crew: 14

These are the principals we have on file — the full crew ran to the hundreds. Every film this size was made by far more hands than any credits list ever names.

Why a floor?

This is a minimum, not a total. We only count the credits we’ve captured so far, and coverage is uneven — a blockbuster might show a few hundred names while another of the same size shows a couple dozen. The real crews all ran into the thousands. The number here only grows as full credits are enriched — so we frame it as a floor, never a headcount.
