Gerta Schnirch

Gerta grows up in the 1930s in Brno, part of a mixed Czech-German family, which leads to tensions with her father as he adopts Nazi ideology. Despite their ideological differences, their bond is maintained through a shared love of music. During the Nazi occupation, Gerta becomes involved in the student resistance alongside her boyfriend Karel, but the war strips everything from her and leaves her with a dark secret that influences the course of her life. After the war, Gerta is forcibly expelled from her homeland, despite being innocent, and she is forced to flee Brno with her infant daughter. She endures the difficult years on a rural farm, later reunites with Karel, and returns to Brno in search of a normal life—though the shadows of her past continue to follow her. The two-part TV film *Gerta Schnirch* presents a personal perspective on 20th-century history through the story of a woman navigating the tensions between two worlds.
