Synopsis

Set in Budapest in the 1930s, the film follows Laszlo, a restaurant owner who hires pianist András to perform at his establishment. Both men become enamored with the beautiful waitress Ilona, whose presence inspires András to compose his only piece, "Gloomy Sunday." Initially well-received, the song's melancholic melody soon becomes associated with a series of suicides, causing it to be feared. The delicate dynamic of the romantic triangle is disrupted when German visitor Hans also falls in love with Ilona.
