Golden Door
Synopsis
The story is set at the beginning of the 20th century in Sicily. Salvatore, a poor farmer and widower, decides to emigrate to the United States with his entire family, including his elderly mother. Before they depart, they meet Lucy, a British woman who claims to want to return to the States. For reasons that remain unclear, Lucy, whom Salvatore calls Luce, insists on marrying someone before arriving at Ellis Island in New York. Salvatore agrees to her proposal. Upon their arrival at Ellis Island, they undergo a quarantine period during which they must pass medical and legal examinations to be admitted into the country. The process proves difficult for uneducated farmers from Sicily, with their fate ultimately determined by customs officers.
