Synopsis

*Good Morning* offers a lighthearted take on director Yasujiro Ozu’s recurring theme of intergenerational relationships. The film follows two young boys who stop speaking in protest after their parents refuse to buy a television set. Ozu incorporates a wealth of subtle gags into a family portrait as detailed as those in his more dramatic works, using the child protagonists to mock the shortcomings of the adult world. Filmed in vibrant color and set in a Tokyo suburb where housewives gossip about a neighbor’s new washing machine and unemployed husbands seek work as door-to-door salesmen, the film reimagines Ozu’s silent classic *I Was Born, But . . .* to offer a gentle satire of consumerism in postwar Japan.
