Synopsis

In 1939, Gracie Fields, known as the "Queen of Hearts," is at the peak of her career as a singer and actress when she faces a public battle with cervical cancer. As World War II erupts, she continues to perform for the troops despite her fragile health, much to the concern of her husband, Monty Banks, an Italian-born film director whose real name is Mario Bianchi. With Italy's entry into the war, Monty faces the risk of internment, and Gracie agrees to let him relocate to America while she undertakes a tour of Canada to raise funds for the war effort. She is criticized for what some see as desertion from the country that made her a star and is even booed offstage, though she later performs for troops on battlefields. After the war ends, she regains some of her popularity, notably singing "Take Me To Your Heart Again" at the London Palladium. Monty Banks dies in 1950, and although Gracie remains a successful singer, she never fully recaptures the iconic status she held before the war.

How many hands made this film

The scale of the collaboration

Principal cast & crew: 18

These are the principals we have on file — the full crew ran to the hundreds. Every film this size was made by far more hands than any credits list ever names.

Why a floor?

This is a minimum, not a total. We only count the credits we’ve captured so far, and coverage is uneven — a blockbuster might show a few hundred names while another of the same size shows a couple dozen. The real crews all ran into the thousands. The number here only grows as full credits are enriched — so we frame it as a floor, never a headcount.
