Synopsis

Benjamin Christensen's film features elements such as grave robbing, torture, possessed nuns, and a satanic Sabbath, using a series of dramatic vignettes to explore the scientific hypothesis that the witches of the Middle Ages experienced the same hysteria as psychiatric patients at the turn of the century. However, the film itself is not a serious work, instead offering a mix of the scary, the grotesque, and the darkly humorous.
