Synopsis
Constructed from 1928 newsreels—the year in which 60 nations pledged to outlaw war—Storck’s sharp montage undermines the era’s self-congratulation by juxtaposing footage of speeches and parades with signs of impending violence: rising nationalism, colonial repression, and police brutality. Slow-motion shots of collapsing chimneys and the exhumation of an “unknown soldier” add a pointed edge to the film’s satirical tone.
