Hope Along the Wind: The Life of Harry Hay

Harry Hay was one of the founding figures of the gay rights movement and, for over 50 years, became closely associated with the concept of "gay pride." Director Eric Slade's documentary explores both Hay's life and the movement he helped shape. In 1948, Hay established the Mattachine Society in Los Angeles, with the aim of creating a "Golden Brotherhood" that would redefine homosexuality as a normal and healthy aspect of life. Hay argued that the issue was not homosexuality itself, but rather the way society treated it. The documentary uses dramatizations, photographs, archival footage, and interviews with original Mattachine Society members to recount Hay's significant story, whose influence remains evident in the portrayal of gays and lesbians in contemporary culture.
