Synopsis
During the 1930s, slum dwellings were a significant issue in many urban areas, particularly in industrialized cities where rapid population growth and economic hardship led to overcrowded and substandard housing conditions. These slums were often characterized by poor sanitation, lack of basic infrastructure, and unsafe living environments. The Great Depression exacerbated the problem, as unemployment and poverty increased, forcing more people into low-cost or informal housing. Governments and social organizations began to take notice, leading to early discussions and some initiatives aimed at urban renewal and housing reform.
