Synopsis
*Phrases of Stephen Foster*, set to music by Joel Heartling, is an autobiographical film in which a solitary female voice, occasionally accompanied by a chorus, sings sorrowful phrases. The visuals follow a solitary man in shadows within an unadorned house: he stretches, lifts his feet, walks across a room, and rocks in a chair. At times, he watches two young children at play; the film occasionally shifts to faster pacing. Handwritten words such as "dark void" and "waiting longing" appear on screen. The film and phrases are often presented in short bursts. Outside, the weather appears gray and cold.
