I Thought I Was Seeing Convicts
Synopsis
The images depict the maximum-security prison in Corcoran, California. A surveillance camera captures a pie-shaped segment of the concrete yard where prisoners, wearing shorts and mostly shirtless, are permitted thirty minutes of outdoor time each day. When one inmate attacks another, the others not involved lie flat on the ground, arms over their heads. They are aware that when a fight occurs, the guard issues a warning and then fires rubber bullets. If the fight persists, the guard shoots live ammunition. The footage is silent, with gun smoke visible drifting across the frame. The camera and the gun are positioned next to each other.
