Inside Costa Concordia: Voices of Disaster
Synopsis
On January 13, 2012, the Costa Concordia, Italy's largest cruise ship, ran aground off the coast of Isola del Giglio, a small island in the Tyrrhenian Sea near Giglio Porto. The incident occurred when the ship deviated from its planned route to perform a maneuver near the island, as part of a celebratory event for the captain. The vessel struck a rock, causing a large gash in its hull and leading to its gradual capsizing. The accident resulted in the deaths of 32 passengers and crew members, with over 4,000 others rescued. The disaster prompted a large-scale maritime salvage operation and led to significant changes in maritime safety regulations and cruise ship protocols. Captain Francesco Schettino was later convicted of multiple charges, including manslaughter and abandoning ship before passengers were evacuated.
