Ivan the Terrible, Part II: The Boyars' Plot
Synopsis
This is the second part of a planned three-part epic biopic of Russian Czar Ivan Grozny, created by Soviet filmmaker Sergei Eisenstein at the request of Josef Stalin. Production of the trilogy was halted before the third part could be made, due to producers' dissatisfaction with Eisenstein's use of experimental filming techniques that were considered inappropriate for the material, particularly evident in this installment. As a result, this second part was banned from public screenings until after the deaths of both Eisenstein and Stalin, and a shift in attitude by the subsequent Soviet leadership. In this segment, Ivan the Terrible attempts to consolidate his power by forming a personal army, while his political rivals, the Russian boyars, conspire to assassinate him.
