Synopsis
Jag Mandir is a relatively quiet and often overlooked film in Werner Herzog's extensive body of work. It is said that 20 hours of footage were shot, capturing the entire festival, though the film itself presents only a fraction of that material. A native viewer encountering the film midway might not immediately recognize the country being depicted or realize that the figures shown are drawn from the mythology of various communities within his nation. The majority of the film consists of footage from an elaborate theatrical performance staged by André Heller at the City Palace of Udaipur, Rajasthan, for Maharana Arvind Singh Mewar.
