Junior and Karlson

A Soviet cult cartoon, which may seem atypical to a Western viewer, especially a child, tells the story of a boy named Malysh ("A Little One"), who feels lonely as the youngest of three children in a Swedish family. His acute sense of loneliness leads him to desperately desire a dog, and before he gets one, he "invents" a friend—Karlson, who lives on the roof. The spirit of mischief typical of Russian culture, where it is often not punished, and the idea that relative comfort does not necessarily equate to happiness, contributed to the popularity of Astrid Lindgren's book and its television adaptations in the Soviet Union and modern-day Russia. In contrast, these elements may appear somewhat alien to Western readers and viewers. Nevertheless, both the book and the cartoon are truly universal, offering entertainment and humor for children and thought-provoking, somewhat melancholic reflections for adults.
