Kazuhiko Kogure, a second-year middle school student, fell from the rooftop of his school. At the time, several other male students were present on the roof. According to their account, Kazuhiko attempted to jump to another school building but failed to make the leap. As a result, he suffered a fractured leg and ribs. Kazuhiko's mother, Hidemi Kogure, questioned the school's explanation, which attributed the incident to students playing around and denied any involvement of bullying. She was skeptical because Kazuhiko had a known fear of heights. Seeking legal recourse, Hidemi consulted attorney Machiko Mayuzumi, who agreed to take the case and enlisted the assistance of attorney Kensuke Komikado. In response, the school retained attorney Teshigahara Isao to represent its interests.
