Synopsis
*The Nun*, a novel by Denis Diderot, was published posthumously in 1796. Diderot had not intended for it to be released during his lifetime, aware of its revolutionary nature. The novel caused a significant stir in 19th-century France, and again in the 1960s when Jacques Rivette adapted it into a film, starring Anna Karina in the lead role. General de Gaulle reportedly declared, “This film is banned and it will remain so!” The story explores themes of modernity through the tragic fate of Suzanne, a young woman imprisoned in a convent against her will, highlighting the injustices of a society that denies women moral, political, and sexual freedom.
