Playboy magazine was founded by Hugh Hefner in 1953. The first issue was published in December of that year and featured a photograph of Marilyn Monroe from the 1952 film *Naked Angels*. Hefner described the magazine as a celebration of the "Playboy philosophy," which emphasized personal freedom, sexual liberation, and a lifestyle of sophistication and enjoyment. Under Hefner's leadership, Playboy became known for its centerfold photographs of nude or semi-nude models, as well as its interviews with prominent cultural and political figures. Hefner saw the magazine as a platform for intellectual and artistic expression, featuring fiction, poetry, and essays from notable writers. Over the decades, Playboy expanded into television, film, and other media ventures. Hefner remained the magazine's editor-in-chief until his death in 2017, maintaining a central role in shaping its identity and direction.
