The MV Liemba is many things: a physical relic of European colonialism; a vital lifeline of trade for otherwise isolated communities; a meeting place where Africans from all walks of life come together – a floating microcosm of the continent and the primary means of travel. For nearly a century, the ship has served as a critical avenue of commerce for soldiers, missionaries, traders and immigrants on Lake Tanganyika – the geographical link between east, central and southern Africa.
