Synopsis

*Line Describing a Cone* is what I term a solid light film. It focuses on the projected light beam itself, rather than treating the light beam as a mere carrier of coded information, which is decoded when it strikes the flat surface—the screen. It is projected in the normal way, using a 16mm film projector. Although there will inevitably be a wall that limits the length of the beam, a screen is not necessary. The viewer watches the film by standing with his or her back toward what would normally be the screen and looking along the beam toward the projector itself. The film begins as a coherent line of light, like a laser beam, and over the 30-minute duration, develops into a complete, hollow cone of light. *Line Describing a Cone* deals with one of the irreducible, necessary conditions of film: projected light. It addresses this phenomenon directly, independent of any other consideration. It is the first film to exist solely in real, three-dimensional space.

How many hands made this film

The scale of the collaboration

Principal cast & crew: 1

These are the principals we have on file — the full crew ran to the hundreds. Every film this size was made by far more hands than any credits list ever names.

Why a floor?

This is a minimum, not a total. We only count the credits we’ve captured so far, and coverage is uneven — a blockbuster might show a few hundred names while another of the same size shows a couple dozen. The real crews all ran into the thousands. The number here only grows as full credits are enriched — so we frame it as a floor, never a headcount.
