Mamori
Synopsis
Mamori presents a black-and-white world of fluid shapes, marked by dappled and striated patterns of light and shadow, where the visuals and the texture of the celluloid are transformed through the filmmaker’s artistic approach. The images and sounds were captured in the Amazon rainforest by filmmaker Karl Lemieux and avant-garde composer Francisco López, known for his work with field recordings. Lemieux re-filmed the photographs on 16 mm stock, developed the film, and digitally edited the material, transforming the raw visuals and sounds into a powerful sensory experience that pushes the boundaries of representation and abstraction. Fragmented musical phrases appear on the soundtrack, evoking the sounds of the tropical rainforest in the remote Amazonian location known as Mamori.
