At the age of forty, Margot Fonteyn is regarded as past her peak as a prima ballerina, and Ninette de Valois is gradually reducing her roles at the Royal Ballet. The arrival of Rudolf Nureyev, a young Russian dancer who has recently defected to the West, brings a dramatic change to her life and career. Their relationship both on and off the stage reinvigorates Fonteyn's artistry. Frederick Ashton choreographs a new ballet for the pair, and they soon become celebrated as the golden couple of the ballet world. However, Fonteyn is married to Roberto "Tito" Arias, a Panamanian politician with a questionable reputation who does not support her career and is likely unfaithful. After Arias is shot and left paralyzed, Fonteyn continues to dance well into her sixties to cover the costs of his medical care, while still performing occasionally with Nureyev.
