Meeting the Man: James Baldwin in Paris
Synopsis
In 1970, a British film crew embarked on a project to create a literary portrait of James Baldwin, set in Paris, with a focus on his work rather than his political activism. Baldwin, however, was critical of their approach, and the resulting film became a provocative and often tense exchange between the filmmaker and the author. In it, Baldwin visits sites such as the Bastille and other notable Parisian landmarks, offering reflections on revolution, colonialism, and the experience of being a Black expatriate in Europe.
