Jerôme Höffner, a schoolboy and brilliant nerd, is frequently bullied by his classmates, though he finds an ally in Said, an assertive immigrant student who stands up for him. His foppish mother, Debbie Höffner, is in a new relationship with Marco Schmitz, who teaches Jerôme how to defend himself. When Jerôme breaks the nose of one of his tormentors, Jan, in self-defense, he is required to attend therapy with a child psychologist. The therapist identifies him as a genius and suggests he attend a Mensa-affiliated boarding school. However, Jerôme deliberately scores average on tests, fearing that Debbie would struggle to cope on her own. Her well-meaning but clumsy efforts to provide him with intellectual enrichment only frustrate him further, prompting him, with Said's help, to visit Dr. Kleybold's IQ school, which proves to be a strong temptation.
