Menschenfrauen

*Menschenfrauen* is a film that explores relationships and the psychological oppression of women in society. Franz, a journalist, is involved with four women: three mistresses and his wife. The mistresses are introduced through television dreams depicting intense emotional violence, such as a scene where a mother shouts at her daughter, stating that as a girl, she does not deserve a room of her own. Franz is desperate to have each woman to himself, though he never offers substantial signs of love, instead saying anything and making any promise to gain affection. His reliance on women for fulfillment is highlighted through arguments with his wife, during which he claims, "I am my own sound. The women produce voices within me." Franz is portrayed as an understandable and at times sympathetic antagonist, and the emotional damage he causes is presented as believable.
