Synopsis

On a cold and stormy night in rural Vermont, midwife Sibyl Danforth, along with the father and an assistant, is in the middle of a homebirth. As the labor progresses, the woman begins to experience complications, leading Sibyl to believe it would be safer for her to deliver the baby at a hospital. However, a dead telephone line and severe weather prevent Sibyl from leaving the house. Black ice and a persistent snowstorm make travel impossible. The next morning, the woman dies, believed to have suffered a stroke. Amid the chaos, Sibyl decides to perform a C-section to save the baby. The infant survives, but the mother is dead, and tragedy is evident. The situation worsens for Sibyl when her assistant claims the woman was still alive when the C-section was performed. Sibyl is charged with manslaughter, brought to court, and her life is irrevocably changed.

How many hands made this film

The scale of the collaboration

Principal cast & crew: 22

These are the principals we have on file — the full crew ran to the hundreds. Every film this size was made by far more hands than any credits list ever names.

Why a floor?

This is a minimum, not a total. We only count the credits we’ve captured so far, and coverage is uneven — a blockbuster might show a few hundred names while another of the same size shows a couple dozen. The real crews all ran into the thousands. The number here only grows as full credits are enriched — so we frame it as a floor, never a headcount.
