Monarda

Walter Ungerer’s *Monarda* (2010) has been shown across the country as part of the 2011 Black Maria Film Festival, a traveling program featuring new experimental cinema. Like much of Ungerer’s work, the 10-minute *Monarda* examines the enigmatic aspects of nature. The film opens with a shot of grass, which Ungerer quickly transforms through digital manipulation into abstract imagery that becomes nearly unrecognizable. Subtle hints of natural elements such as leaves and twigs provide a faint anchor to reality amid the otherwise indescribable sequence of images. While the visuals resist straightforward interpretation, the film’s brevity and clarity allow the viewer to become immersed in their own experience rather than focused on deciphering the filmmaker’s intent. *Monarda* evokes a sense of both apprehension and wonder. It is a disquieting work, yet its refined technique and atmosphere grow more compelling with repeated viewings.
