Monsieur Batignole

In 1942, during the German occupation of Paris, Edmond Batignole, an apolitical grocer, lives with his wife and daughter in a small apartment above his grocery store. When his future son-in-law, Pierre-Jean Lamour, a collaborator with the Germans, calls the Nazis to arrest the Jewish Bernstein family, Batignole and his family are forced to move into the Bernstein's confiscated apartment. A few days later, Simon Bernstein, a young member of the family, escapes from the Germans and returns to his former home. Moved with pity, Batignole takes Simon in, keeping him hidden from both Pierre-Jean and his wife. Later, Simon's two cousins arrive and take refuge in the grocery's cellar. When Pierre-Jean discovers the children, Batignole decides to accompany them on a journey to Switzerland.
