Monsieur Joseph

Monsieur Joseph is a respected citizen of a small town in northern France. For over four decades, he has operated a specialized bookshop in the town's shopping square. Every morning before opening his shop, he enjoys a cup of black coffee at the local café, where he engages in small talk with Julien, the barkeeper, and the regular patrons. Everyone liked him—until the night his young wife, Tina, disappeared without a trace. Since then, Monsieur Joseph has become Youssef once again, regarded once more as the "foreigner," a label tied to his Kabyle heritage. Now seen as a suspicious outsider, he is increasingly viewed with fear and suspicion. The townspeople begin to believe he must have murdered his wife, especially in light of another unsolved woman's murder four years earlier. After all, they reason, there is no smoke without fire.
