Synopsis
Bruce Baillie's *Mr. Hayashi* can be seen as an East Coast narrative reinterpreted through a West Coast sensibility. The minimal storyline offers a form of social critique, focusing on the title character, a Japanese gardener, who struggles to find well-paying work. However, the elegance of Baillie's black-and-white cinematography, the lush and misty quality of the landscapes he captures, and the quiet presence of Mr. Hayashi within them shift the viewer's focus away from economic and ethnic concerns. The imagery evokes Sung dynasty scrolls depicting fields and mountain peaks, where human figures appear small in the middle distance.
