Synopsis
Mark Gatiss explores the mind of M.R. James, the enigmatic English master of supernatural fiction. The film examines how this donnish Victorian bachelor, known for his conservative nature and devout Anglicanism, came to produce stories that still unsettle readers more than a century later. Gatiss embarks on a journey to uncover the sources of James's inspiration, traveling from James's childhood home in Suffolk to Eton, Cambridge, and France, while visiting ancient churches, dark cloisters, and echoing libraries along the way.
