Synopsis
Tony is a 20-year-old Chinese man who has lived in the UK his entire life. His father, who is described as inscrutable, works in a Chinese takeaway and has scarcely spoken to Tony, let alone touched him, throughout his life. Tony has accepted this as part of the Chinese way. However, when his father narrowly avoids a car accident, Tony begins to long for a more expressive and meaningful relationship with him. This proves difficult, as Tony recalls the few times his father has spoken to him—never saying "happy birthday," failing to say goodbye when Tony left home at 18, and neglecting to congratulate him on his wedding day. His father remains silent even at the death of Tony's mother. Tony begins to question whether his father has any feelings at all. When his father is involved in another car accident—this time fatal—Tony makes the decision to take his father away.
