Neanderthal, the Mystery of the Bruniquel Cave
Synopsis
In 1990, Bruno Kowalczewski discovered a cave in the Aveyron Gorges, near the village of Bruniquel, which showed evidence of Neanderthal habitation dating back approximately 47,000 years. The site features stalagmites arranged in circular formations. The significance of these limestone rings, and their precise dating, remained unclear, as excavations were halted in the late 1990s to prevent damage to the remains. In 2014, a new research team resumed investigations at the cave. Using the uranium-thorium dating method, calcite samples were found to be 176,500 years old, making the structure one of the oldest known underground constructions. The complexity of the stone circle raises questions about its construction and purpose. This discovery contributes new insights into the capabilities of Neanderthals.
