Synopsis
*Night Journey*, the dance, premiered just over two and a half years after *Appalachian Spring* and is considered a close relative. Like its predecessor, it features a stream-of-consciousness narration, in this case following Jocasta as she recalls events leading up to her impending suicide. The work also includes introspective solos interspersed with ensemble dances. Here, however, the ensemble takes on a more ominous role, functioning as a counterpart to the chorus in Greek tragedy. Their presence evokes a sense of fear. The piece reflects Martha Graham's habitual economy of movement, which in this case is taken to its extreme.
