Synopsis
Andrei Gorchakov, a Russian poet, travels through Italy with his interpreter, Eugenia, to research the life of an 18th-century Russian composer who lived abroad. Struggling with isolation and a deep yearning for his homeland, Andrei becomes increasingly fascinated by Domenico, a radical mystic who is consumed by the pursuit of spiritual redemption. Using austere imagery and extended temporal rhythms, Andrei Tarkovsky explores themes of exile, memory, and the deep melancholy that comes from being unable to fully belong to any one place or language.
