As Germany, Italy, Spain, and Switzerland shift away from nuclear energy in favor of renewable sources, France—currently the most nuclear-dependent country in the world, with 70% of its electricity generated by nuclear reactors—is planning to invest in new EPR reactors. This decision raises questions about its compatibility with the ecological transition. While nuclear power plants do not emit CO2 during operation, the decommissioning process at the end of their life cycle produces significant amounts of contaminated waste. The reuse of this waste remains uncertain, and its long-term storage presents major challenges. Additionally, the potential for catastrophic accidents, as seen in Chernobyl and Fukushima, remains a concern.
