Old Goriot
Synopsis
A poor but ambitious young man arrives in Paris and takes up residence in a boarding house operated by Madame Vauquer. He soon becomes familiar with the other residents: Victorine Taillefer, a young woman whose wealthy father refuses to acknowledge her; Horace Bianchon, a medical student; Monsieur Vautrin, a mysterious and unsettling figure; and Goriot, a wealthy merchant who has spent his entire fortune to ensure his daughters, Delphine and Anastasie, make advantageous marriages. Eugène forms a friendship with Goriot, and through his cousin Madame de Beauséant, he is introduced to high society. Meanwhile, Goriot, mistreated and mocked by his own daughters, continues his downward spiral.
