Synopsis
Eight Rwandan children leave their families to undertake a life-or-death journey for high-risk heart surgery in Sudan. Their hearts are damaged by a treatable disease caused by childhood strep throat, leaving them with only months to live. *Open Heart* explores the connected efforts of Dr. Emmanuel, Rwanda's only government cardiologist working to save his young patients, and Dr. Gino, the Salam Center's lead surgeon, who is striving to preserve his hospital—the only facility in Africa offering free, life-saving cardiac surgery to millions in need.
