Synopsis

Oscar Hopkins, a misfit who endured abuse during childhood at the hands of his evangelistic father, becomes an Anglican minister and develops an intense, almost divine, obsession with gambling. Lucinda Leplastrier, a wealthy Australian heiress, is in London to purchase materials for her newly acquired glass factory in Australia. Deciding to travel to Australia as a missionary, Oscar meets Lucinda aboard the ship, and a mutual attraction and obsession develop between them. They enter into a wager that will significantly alter the course of their lives.
