Peer Gynt

Young Peer Gynt returns home after failing to find work, meeting his mother who greets him and listens to his exaggerated tales of supposed adventures. In his mind, he imagines himself as a king, retreating from reality through his stories. His mother had hoped he would marry Ingrid, as her dowry would provide for them, but Ingrid is already betrothed to Mats and is set to marry him the following day. While Peer lies in the grass, lost in thought, the villagers mock him and urge him to attend Ingrid's wedding feast, where the whole village is celebrating. He pays no heed, but at the feast he meets Solveig, whom he is drawn to, though she initially avoids him. In a fit of impulsive action, he kidnaps the bride, Ingrid, drawing the anger of the groom and the rest of the village youth.
