Synopsis
The theme of death is prominently featured in Smolder’s surreal tribute to Belgian painter Antoine Wiertz, an artist in the style of Hieronymus Bosch whose work depicted humans in various stages of torment, often presented in large-scale canvases filled with graphic imagery. Smolders has adapted a conventional documentary format by fragmenting it, incorporating quotes from the deceased artist and interspersing commentary from a historian (Smolders) that provides details about Wiertz’s life.
