People of the Cumberland
Synopsis
Set in rural Tennessee, the film portrays communities that have suffered economic and environmental damage caused by the coal mining industry. The establishment of the Highlander Folk School in 1931 by educator Myles Horton and the push to bring labor union representation to the region are depicted as efforts to empower the local population. Union activities face resistance, including the murder of a local organizer, but the movement eventually gains a foothold among the workers.
