Phèdre
Synopsis
Hèdre is queen but does not love the king. She favors his son, Hippolytus, whom Theseus had from a previous marriage, over his own son. Her love for Hippolytus is a guilty one, concealed under feigned hatred, causing her great suffering and ultimately leading to her death. She cannot restrain herself from confessing her feelings upon hearing of the king's death. However, Hippolytus does not return her love, and the king is only wounded. Stricken with shame, Hèdre can no longer face him. Oenone, her confidante, attempts to save her by convincing the king that the insult comes from his son. Incited by Theseus, divine fury falls upon Hippolytus. The queen, now revealed as an adulteress, takes her own life.
