A young priest arrives in a town to assist the aging provost in pastoral duties. In early May, the parish is preparing for the First Communion. Unexpectedly, the provost is hospitalized after suffering a heart attack, leaving Priest Piotr alone in a new and unfamiliar environment. During a catechism session, one girl, Marta, draws his attention—she is often sad, withdrawn, and at times aggressive. Marta is the daughter of the town’s wealthiest man. During her confession, the priest senses she is concealing something. On the day of the sacrament, Marta flees from the altar. After an extensive search, Priest Piotr finds her hiding in a vestry, where she reveals a disturbing truth.
