Pasquale Lojacono moves into a large flat with his wife, Maria, under a special arrangement with the owner: in exchange for free accommodation, Pasquale must dispel rumors that the house is haunted by ghosts. He soon begins receiving regular sums of money from spirits, whom he claims are generous and supportive. Over time, it becomes clear that the source of his fortune is a ghost who has become Maria's lover and seeks to silence Pasquale in order to flee with her. The situation becomes more complex with the involvement of the doorman, his sister, and the lover's family, each of whom takes advantage of the ghost rumors for personal gain. These events unfold under the watchful eye of Professor Santanna, who observes and comments on the strange occurrences with Pasquale from his apartment window across the way.
